Where uneven tone comes from
Melanin protects skin from UV. Sun exposure, inflammation (including after breakouts) and hormonal changes can cause it to be produced unevenly, leaving dark spots and patches. Dullness adds to the picture when dead cells build up and skin loses hydration.
Sunscreen comes first
No ingredient can outpace daily sun exposure. Broad-spectrum sunscreen, every day and reapplied outdoors, is the single most important step for an even-looking tone.
Ingredients with evidence
Niacinamide is widely studied for a more even-looking tone. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps defend against environmental stress. Retinol supports renewal. Vitality combines all three with vitamin E.
